About Arm Lift Surgery

Whether it is due to weight changes and/or pregnancy, or just loss of elasticity (stretchiness) of the skin over the years, women will sometimes get "bat wings", those loose, hanging flaps of skin from the upper arm.
If there is only some extra fat, then the fat can be reduced using liposuction, the removal of localized fat through small incisions. However, when there is extra skin, optimal improvement will likely require removal of some of that skin.
Removal of skin is always accompanied by a scar, and sometimes the scar in the upper arm can look good for a while but then spread. Fortunately, we can generally put the scar in the inner portion of the upper arm, where it is less noticable.
Through the years, we have tried to limit the length of the scar, but as in other areas of plastic surgery, reducing the length of the scar reduces the amount of improvement available.
Dr. James Nachbar, a Scottsdale, AZ plastic surgeon, is very skilled in skin tightening and fat removal surgical techniques, and he provides private consultations for surgical arm lifts.
If you would like to learn more about how an upper arm lift can alter the contour of your arms, please schedule a consultation at Scottsdale Plastic Surgery today.
An arm lift is an aesthetic surgery employing innovative techniques to contour and remove extra skin to tighten the upper arm.
If you avoid sleeveless clothes because you are self-conscious about your arms and want them to look trim and taut again, you are an ideal candidate for arm lift surgery.
You should be in good overall health so that your body will heal well. Some of the top concerns for patients who want an arm lift are excess, hanging skin on the upper arms, and decreased tightness of the skin.
"Been to this office before and the staff is wonderful. The doctor is great and I love his work."- Anonymous / Office Visit / Apr 26, 2018
"If you are thinking about getting a breast augmentation, first of all, do it because it’s absolutely life changing and two, go to Dr. Nachbar because he is the absolute BEST and so is all of his staff! I had been thinking about wanting to have my breasts done for awhile. My mom had her breasts done by Dr. Nachbar awhile back and had great results, so I was already very confident in Dr. Nachbar! They have an amazing photo machine where it simulates what your breast augmentation would look like and it’s beyond helpful and really accurate. I’m 2 and 1/2 weeks post op and I seriously could not be happier. I finally have a chest that is proportionate to my body and I feel amazing and so confident! Dr. Nachbar picked the size based off what I told him I was wanting and they are absolutely perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing!! The staff is also sooo nice, helpful, and reassuring. For the surgery, I was really nervous because with the COVID-19 protocols, you can’t have any family with you for pre op. But Dr. Nachbar and the staff made me feel so at ease and comfortable, I ended up not having an ounce of nervousness. It was amazing. I really cannot say enough great things about Dr. Nachbar!! He has so much experience and is an incredible surgeon!! Thank you Dr. Nachbar!!!!!"- M.M. / Yelp / Sep 28, 2020
"It’s been over 3 months from my surgery date and since day 1 post op I had zero regrets. From the appointments before the surgery to the actual surgery center and the post op appointments, everything went great. I love my results. Glad I did the research and found a great doctor. Everyone in Dr. Nachbar’s office is also so amazing! I would recommend him to anyone."- L.M. / Google / Sep 25, 2020
"Labiaplasty and Hood Reduction - I had a labiaplasty done on one side ten years back. My insurance covered it because of how uncomfortable it was. I used to pull on one side of my labia as a kid and it grew to some lengths from that and made things uncomfortable. That first surgery was with my OBYN and they took too much off that one side which caused a discolored sunken in the scar. I had an indent and white spot on my labia for 10 years before saving and having a plastic surgeon fix it. I had the wedge technique done to remove the scar on one side then the other side that's more swollen was trimmed to match. I also had my hood reduced. I'm very swollen but wanted to show others the whole process. It's an experience for sure so make sure you have a week off work. The healing is uncomfortable but so worth it! I'll post every week with updates! I am VERY bruised but not terribly swollen as I've seen. Ice is my best friend! So far I'm so happy about it. I cost me $5,800 in total and was completely out for the entire procedure. The entire staff is incredible! Dr. Nachbar in Phoenix Az. The first photo is the day of surgery. Will add before photos soon!"- B. / RealSelf / Sep 25, 2020

Typically, your upper arm lift surgery will take place in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia, unless several plastic surgeries are scheduled to be performed at the same time, in which case an overnight stay may be involved.
The sagging skin will be surgically excised from the elbow up to the underarm. The incision will be made to be as concealed as possible, but it will leave a visible scar. If liposuction is required to remove stubborn fat, this will be performed as well. Once the skin is tightened, it will be sutured in place. You will need to keep the incisions sanitized, covered, and in compression garments.
An arm lift can be added to other procedures, like a Post-Baby Tune-Up® Mommy Makeover, No-Drain Tummy Tuck, or thigh lift — if Dr. Nachbar decides it is safe. If a breast reduction or breast lift is planned or has been done, the incision for the arm lift can be connected to that from the breast surgery, to also tighten the tissue of the side of the chest.
What to Expect
Your should expect that the hands may become somewhat swollen due to tightening of the upper arm skin. This can be minimized by elevating the arms and hands on pillows above the level of your chest.
The dressing used may vary, but most often involves gauze wrap without an Ace wrap.
