About Arm Lift Surgery

Whether it is due to weight changes and/or pregnancy, or just loss of elasticity (stretchiness) of the skin over the years, women will sometimes get "bat wings", those loose, hanging flaps of skin from the upper arm.

If there is only some extra fat, then the fat can be reduced using liposuction, the removal of localized fat through small incisions. However, when there is extra skin, optimal improvement will likely require removal of some of that skin.

Removal of skin is always accompanied by a scar, and sometimes the scar in the upper arm can look good for a while but then spread. Fortunately, we can generally put the scar in the inner portion of the upper arm, where it is less noticable.

Through the years, we have tried to limit the length of the scar, but as in other areas of plastic surgery, reducing the length of the scar reduces the amount of improvement available.

Dr. James Nachbar, a Scottsdale, AZ plastic surgeon, is very skilled in skin tightening and fat removal surgical techniques, and he provides private consultations for surgical arm lifts.

What Are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?

At Scottsdale Plastic Surgery, patients who choose arm lifts can experience several significant benefits after their surgery:

  • Reducing rubbing, chafing, and soreness in the chest and arm areas
  • Improving the look of excess skin due to dramatic weight loss or getting older
  • Targeting areas that seem to be resistant to physical activity or healthy eating
  • Enhanced self-image and satisfaction when picking out clothing

Who Is An Ideal Candidate for An Arm Lift?

An arm lift is an aesthetic surgery employing innovative techniques to contour and remove extra skin to tighten the upper arm.

If you avoid sleeveless clothes because you are self-conscious about your arms and want them to look trim and taut again, you are an ideal candidate for arm lift surgery.

You should be in good overall health so that your body will heal well. Some of the top concerns for patients who want an arm lift are excess, hanging skin on the upper arms, and decreased tightness of the skin.

How Is An Arm Lift Performed?

Typically, your upper arm lift surgery will take place in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia, unless several plastic surgeries are scheduled to be performed at the same time, in which case an overnight stay may be involved.

The sagging skin will be surgically excised from the elbow up to the underarm. The incision will be made to be as concealed as possible, but it will leave a visible scar. If liposuction is required to remove stubborn fat, this will be performed as well. Once the skin is tightened, it will be sutured in place. You will need to keep the incisions sanitized, covered, and in compression garments.

An arm lift can be added to other procedures, like a Post-Baby Tune-Up® Mommy Makeover, No-Drain Tummy Tuck, or thigh lift — if Dr. Nachbar decides it is safe. If a breast reduction or breast lift is planned or has been done, the incision for the arm lift can be connected to that from the breast surgery, to also tighten the tissue of the side of the chest.

How Is Recovery form An Arm Lift?

Your should expect that the hands may become somewhat swollen due to tightening of the upper arm skin.  This can be minimized by elevating the arms and hands on pillows above the level of your chest.

The dressing used may vary, but most often involves gauze wrap without an Ace wrap.

Arm Lift - Dr. Nachbar, Amber and staff were friendly and welcoming. Very patient, took time explaining everything and answering all the questions we had. Dr. Nachbar came highly recommended by a friend of mine. I have a second consult elsewhere at the end of the month but will very likely be scheduling my surgery with Dr. Nachbar. We just felt incredibly comfortable with him and his staff and really appreciated their time.

About Us
Can I combine an arm lift with other surgeries?

It's common for patients who want an arm lift to combine the surgery with another procedure. This is often known as an upper body lift and can combine liposuction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), or breast surgery (breast lift). Arm lift surgery is also commonly performed as part of an after weight loss surgery for those who have lost a large amount of weight and want body contouring or loose skin removal. During your initial consultation with Dr. Nachbar, other surgeries can be discussed to develop your personal treatment plan.

Will there be scars?

Arm lift surgery requires incisions to cut away excess skin, which means there will be stitches and scarring. However, Dr. Nachbar makes every effort to ensure that your incisions are small and placed in inconspicuous areas. After your surgery, ointments that help with healing and other tips for minimizing scarring will likely be suggested. Dr. Nachbar also recommends limiting sun exposure on the arms for at least one year to reduce scar discoloration. Patients generally believe the overall benefits of a more toned arm outweigh the appearance of scars.

What results can I expect from an arm lift?

A surgical arm lift is performed to address loose skin and fat. You should follow a healthy lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and exercise to avoid a dramatic change in your weight, which may affect your results. After your lift surgery, as soon as your arms are fully healed and Dr. Nachbar has authorized it, you can begin strength training. Building muscle is a great way to add shape to your upper arms.
