About Brazilian Butt Lift

The so-called "Brazilian Butt Lift", or "BBL," is one of the most rapidly growing treatments in the U.S. and is currently in popular demand by both men and women.

This surgery involves transferring some fat from other parts of your body, removed by liposuction, and injecting it into the buttock area to produce more fullness there.  It allows improvement in the size and shape of the buttock area without the need for a buttock implant.

Ideal Candidates

 The best candidates for the the Brazilian butt lift will have significant extra fat in unwanted areas, which can be removed from those areas and injected into the buttock area.

Often, the removal of the extra fat, for example above and below the buttock, can significantly accentuate the overall shape of the buttock area merely by better exposing the buttock itself.

Patients who want a more shapely buttock area but who do not have much extra fat elsewhere may be a better candidate for buttock implant.

Buttock implant, if that is used, can be placed through an incision in the midline, between the buttock cheeks.  If a posterior buttock lift or circumferential abdominoplasty has been done or is planned, the buttock implants can be placed through that incision, without the need for additional incisions or scars.

Also, it is also necessary to have healthy skin laxity. If your buttocks has loose, hanging skin, you may require a surgical buttock lift. If you are at a healthy weight, have unwanted fat to extract, and do not want to use a foreign object such as an implant, this enhancement surgery may be an ideal choice for you.

Surgical Technique

General anesthesia is used for a Brazilian butt lift surgery. It is an outpatient procedure and on average takes approximately 2 – 3 hours, depending on the liposuction involved and whether other procedures are planned.

Liposuction will be used first to extract fat from specific locations on the body such as the abdominal area, hips and thighs. This process of fat removal is performed precisely and safely so the fat tissue is not subjected to open air before it is purified for re-injection.

After this process, viable and healthy fat tissue is harvested and put into syringes. In the final step, the injection transfer occurs, with the extracted fat tissue reinstated in layers with a gentle massage to make sure the surface looks smooth. This phase is repeated multiple times until the desired roundness and shape has been achieved.

What to Expect

Following a Brazilian butt lift, you will be released home to rest. Keep in mind there are two areas that need recovery time — both the areas where the fat was extracted and the augmented area. Both areas will have incision care needed.

Patients should try their best to not place unnecessary weight, and especially shearing forces, on the rear end for approximately 2 weeks following surgery to give the transferred fat the best chance of survival in its new location.

After the swelling has gone away, you will be able to see the improved contour of the buttock, both because of the fat transfer and because of the removal of the surrounding fat.
