Gynecomastia is the medical term to describe enlarged male breasts. It is a condition that can create an appearance that starts to look less masculine due to abnormally growing breast tissue.
Gynecomastia may be related to an underlying hormonal issue. It can also be caused by certain medications, steroids, obesity, marijuana use, or genetics.
Men with this issue typically feel frustrated and anxious, especially in circumstances where the upper body and chest are seen such as by the beach or in the gym.
Scottsdale, AZ plastic surgeon Dr. James Nachbar offers male breast reduction surgery for men who have gynecomastia. This surgical procedure has a high success rate. It is considered one of the more popular cosmetic procedures for men at Scottsdale Plastic Surgery.

Surgical Technique
Liposuction is often used during surgery for gynecomastia, and may involve ultrasonic liposuction to help break up and remove the excess tissue. With the patient safely under general anesthesia, liposuction is applied to help rid excess pockets of fat from the chest wall.
In some cases, Dr. Nachbar will make a small incision by the areola to remove some excess glandular tissue.
What To Expect
Following gynecomastia treatment, your chest may be secured with a medical garment to help decrease bruising and swelling.
The results following male breast reduction surgery should be immediately noticeable, but maximal improvement will be visible after six to twelve weeks, when the swelling is resolved.
The incisions made during treatment take several weeks to heal.
Once healing is complete, exercise and strength training will complement the end results.

Gynecomastia FAQs
Can gynecomastia resolve on its own without treatment?
In some cases, particularly during puberty, gynecomastia may resolve on its own as hormone levels stabilize. However, if the condition persists beyond a few years or develops later in life, it's less likely to resolve without intervention. Persistent gynecomastia often requires medical or surgical treatment to remove the excess tissue. Regular monitoring and early consultation can help determine whether observation or active treatment is necessary.
How can gynecomastia impact physical health beyond its appearance?
Beyond its physical appearance, gynecomastia can sometimes be associated with discomfort or pain, particularly if the breast tissue becomes tender or swollen. The condition can also signal underlying health issues, such as hormonal disorders, liver disease, or the side effects of certain medications. It's important for individuals with gynecomastia to undergo a thorough medical evaluation to rule out any serious underlying conditions and to address any physical discomfort.
Is gynecomastia a risk factor for breast cancer in men?
Although rare, men with gynecomastia do have a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer compared to those without the condition. This risk is still low overall, but it's important for men with gynecomastia to be aware of any changes in their breast tissue, such as lumps, skin dimpling, or nipple discharge, and to seek medical evaluation if these occur. Regular self-examinations and routine medical check-ups can help in the early detection of any potential issues.
