There are several factors that can cause vaginal dryness, vaginal looseness, stress incontinence, and a decrease in sexual sensation. Some of the most common factors are pregnancy, childbirth, genetic factors, aging, and menopause. Thankfully, Dr. James Nachbar of Scottsdale Plastic Surgery is able to treat the effects of these factors with ThermiVa nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation.
ThermiVa utilizes radiofrequency energy to help tighten vaginal tissue and treat vaginal laxity. It also is able to stimulate the production of collagen and treat functional difficulties, such as stress incontinence. The best candidate for ThermiVa is a patient with one or more of the several problems that ThermiVa can treat. Women generally notice reduction in vaginal laxity, improvement in vaginal lubrication and moisture, reduction or elimination of mild to moderate stress incontinence (urine that may seep out when you laugh or cough), and improvement in sensation.
Generally, there is improvement with the first treatment, but a total of three treatments, about a month apart, is recommended for most patients. However, sometime women will "stretch out" those first three treatments, depending on how much improvement occurs with each treatment.
The effect of the ThermiVa is long lasting but not permanent, and therefore a single repeat treatment is recommended every six months to one year after the initial series.
ThermiVa works best with problems that are not too severe. In particular, more severe stress incontinence may require other treatments.
While the appearance of the external lips ("labia majora") improves with treatment, the appearance of the inner lips ("labia minora") generally does not show visible changes from ThermiVa. However, labia minora can be improved significantly with surgical labiaplasty, if desired.
The skin and vaginal tissue temperature increase is modest and not uncomfortable, and not hot enough to actually do any damage. The effect of ThermiVa seems to be related to the radiofrequency energy that passes through the tissue from the probe.
Performed as an in-office procedure, each ThermiVa treatment takes about 30 minutes. No anesthesia is needed, and most women merely feel the warmth of the treatment.
For the actual procedure, the ThermiVa wand is first positioned over the external tissue of the vagina and then is gently inserted into the internal area. Each area is treated for a specific length of time.
The wand has a built-in thermometer to control the temperature to ensure the safety of your tissue. The wand itself is smaller than the diameter of a finger.
Following the treatment, there is no downtime, and patients may resume sex the very same day as treatment.
What to Expect
Patients typically see improvement from the first ThermiVa fairly quickly after treatment, but maximal results occur after the third treatment.
You should expect to have repeat maintenance treatments every six months ot a year after the initial treatment, but can have an additional treatment any time you notice the results wearing off.
